How To Treat Receding Gums
One of the visible consequences of gum disease is receding gums — a condition in which the gum line moves downward along the tooth’s root. Gum recession can affect a single tooth or multiple teeth. Common symptoms include inflamed tissue, exposed roots, root sensitivity, and cavities on the root surface.
Gum recession must be treated promptly, as your gums serve as a protective barrier against harmful bacteria. Without treatment, this condition can lead to tooth decay, gum disease, gum and bone deterioration, and even tooth loss.
When Is Gum Grafting Needed?
Gum grafting is recommended if you experience one or more of the following signs:
- Exposed tooth root
- Inflamed or irritated gum tissue
- Cavities on the surface of the root
- Increased tooth sensitivity
- Aesthetic concerns with receding gums
- Presence of gum disease
- Deterioration of gum or bone tissue
Procedure of Gum Grafting
A gum graft repositions the gum line to reduce the amount of tooth exposed when you smile. This not only improves aesthetics but also helps protect the tooth roots from sensitivity, decay, and further gum disease.
At Gentle Dentistry of Carmel Valley, Dr. Maggie Abadan and her team will determine the most suitable grafting procedure for you based on your condition and prognosis.
Types of Gum Grafting Surgery
- Connective Tissue Grafts – Tissue is taken from beneath a flap on the roof of the mouth and placed over the exposed root.
- Free Gingival Grafts – A thin layer of tissue is removed from the roof of the mouth and attached to the gum area needing treatment.
- Pedicle Grafts – Gum tissue is taken from a flap near the affected area and repositioned to cover the exposed root.
- Pinhole Surgical Technique – A minimally invasive method that does not require donor tissue, instead using small pinholes to reposition existing gum tissue.
In all techniques except Pinhole, donor tissue is taken either from your own mouth or from a tissue bank.
