Dental Sedation in San Diego: Options for Anxious Patients

By Dr. Maggie Abadan·March 8, 2026·5 min read

Dental Anxiety Is More Common Than You Think

Studies suggest that 36% of Americans experience dental anxiety, and 12% have extreme dental fear (dentophobia). Avoiding dental care due to anxiety leads to worsening oral health, more complex problems, and higher treatment costs over time. Sedation dentistry is the solution.

Sedation Options at Gentle Dentistry of Carmel Valley

We offer two forms of conscious sedation to help anxious patients receive the care they need comfortably and safely:

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Nitrous oxide is administered through a small mask worn over the nose. Effects include relaxation, mild euphoria, and reduced sensitivity to discomfort. The gas wears off within minutes of removal, allowing most patients to drive home. Nitrous oxide is safe for children and adults alike.

  • Mild-to-moderate anxiety relief
  • Works within minutes
  • No lasting grogginess
  • Safe for children and adults
  • Minimal risk profile

Oral Conscious Sedation

A prescription sedative is taken 1 hour before your appointment. You remain conscious and responsive but deeply relaxed — many patients have little memory of the procedure afterward.

  • Moderate-to-severe anxiety relief
  • Deeper relaxation than nitrous oxide
  • You must have someone drive you home
  • Residual drowsiness for several hours after
  • Allows completion of complex multi-hour procedures in one visit

Who Is Sedation Dentistry Right For?

Sedation dentistry is ideal for patients with dental phobia or anxiety, strong gag reflex, sensitive teeth, difficulty getting numb from local anesthesia, need for extensive dental work in a single visit, or traumatic past dental experiences.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is sedation dentistry safe in San Diego?
Yes. Conscious sedation (nitrous oxide and oral sedation) is safe when administered by a trained dentist. Dr. Abadan monitors all vital signs throughout your appointment and reviews your complete medical history before recommending sedation.
Will I be awake during sedation dentistry?
With both nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation, you remain awake and responsive — not fully unconscious. You will feel calm and relaxed, and may have limited memory of the procedure afterward (especially with oral sedation).
